Atlantic Football Looks to Further Playoff Prospects Against Greene County

Sports

October 10th, 2025 by Christian Adams

The Atlantic Trojans are one of two teams in the district without a district loss, and they will look to keep that way as they face off against the Greene County Rams Friday night. The Trojans have just three games remaining and all of them are of the upmost importance. The Formula is simple. If the Trojans win their next two games, they’re in. However, with Greene County coming of a loss to Carroll, head coach Joe Brummer knows that the Greene County Rams will be desperate to avoid a second district loss.

Yet again, the Atlantic defense will have to face a mobile quarterback. Not only has Greene County quarterback Zack Stadler thrown for nearly a thousand yards, but he is also second on the team in rushing. That being said, the Trojans have fared well against the numerous mobile quarterbacks they faced this year. The fact that they’ve seen this many is no coincidence.

In addition to the mobility of Stadler, Atlantic will have to be prepared to defend down the field.

The offense has been hitting its stride as of late. Ethan Mcneal has Eclipsed 150 yards in each of the last three games while the offense is averaging over 41 points per game through that same stretch. Although you won’t see Atlantic fix what’s not broken, they do have some wrinkles in their back pocket.

Ultimately, if Atlantic is going to walk away with a win, they will need to do what’s made them successful this season. Control the line of scrimmage, run the ball efficiently, and win the turnover battle.

You can catch all the action on KJAN with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 with Kickoff scheduled for 7 pm.

(New Virginia, Iowa) – A collision Thursday night in southwestern Warren County resulted in one-person being flown to a hospital in Des Moines. The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened at around 8:05-p.m. on Interstate 35, near mile-maker 43, west of New Virginia.

Authorities say a pickup driven by 44-year-old Ariel Suarez Irsula, of Houston, TX, was southbound on I-35 in the right lane, pulling a flatbed trailer. A car driven by 22-year-old Juan Daniel Perez, of Osceola, was southbound in the same location, approaching the pickup/trailer at a high rate of speed. Iowa delegation praises Trump as peacemaker

News

October 10th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The six Republicans in Iowa’s congressional delegation are calling President Trump a peacemaker. Trump says Israeli hostages in Gaza will be released early next week in phase one of a ceasefire deal to stop the fighting between Israel and Hamas. Senator Joni Ernst says the living nightmare the hostages have been forced to endure will end and two American hostages who’ve died can be laid to rest. Congressman Randy Feenstra, who represents Iowa’s fourth district, says Trump is an incredible leader for our country and the free world.

“Think about this…Throughout history, I mean, this part of the world has been in conflict and to get a peace deal is truly remarkable,” Feenstra said. “I mean, just amazing.” Feenstra has made several trips to Israel, including a trip after Hamas militants swarmed through Israeli towns on October 7th and killed 12-hundred people. “I met with several families of hostages when I was there,” Feenstra said. “It’s so important to me to make sure that we stand with Israel and this ceasefire and this negotiated agreement stands.”

Senator Chuck Grassley says he supports an outcome that ensures the forever survival of Israel. Second Congresswoman Ashley Hinson calls Trump the “peacemaker in chief” and Hinson says after the unimaginable brutality unleashed by Hamas two years ago, the hostages will be reunited with their families.

Third Congressman Zach Nunn says President Trump’s peace deal is a historic win for Israel’s security, American leadership, and long-term stability in the Middle East. First district Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks says Trump is the peace president who did what many thought was impossible.

Traffic stop in Fremont County results in a 2-state chase & arrest of a Missouri man

News

October 10th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Sidney, Iowa) -Sheriff’s officials in Fremont County report a traffic stop Wednesday night resulted in a high-speed pursuit that entered into Nebraska and back into Iowa before ending in a crash and the arrest of a man from Missouri.
Authorities say that at around 10:40-pm, Wednesday,  a Deputy with the Fremont County K9 Unit attempted a traffic stop on a red Hummer H2 near the intersection of 195th Avenue and Highway 2. The vehicle had been called in earlier in the night for traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29. The vehicle accelerated, attempting to flee from law enforcement, resulting in a pursuit. The vehicle continued west to Syracuse, Nebraska.
At that time, the Nebraska State Patrol was following the vehicle as well. The Hummer continued west and suddenly crossed the median and headed back east toward Iowa. The Otoe County, Nebraska, Sheriff’s Office then took over the pursuit, which continued east on Highway 2 at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. The vehicle continued toward Nebraska City, where Stop Sticks were successfully deployed by the Nebraska State Patrol, as well as the Nebraska City Police Department, but the Hummer continued eastbound and entered back into Iowa.
Stop Sticks were once again successfully deployed by a Fremont County Deputy, as well as an Iowa State Trooper. The vehicle continued east on Highway 2 where it crashed in a construction zone in the 2500 block of Highway 2. The driver ran on foot where he was later apprehended by a Mills County Deputy without incident.
The suspect was identified as Jorge L. Lara, of St. Joseph, Missouri. He was charged with Eluding while traveling 25+ miles per hour over the posted speed limit, a Class D Felony.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Otoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska City Police Department, the Nebraska State Patrol, the Nebraska State Patrol Airwing, the Iowa State Patrol and the Mills County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
It should be noted that a criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Riverside Volleyball Stays Perfect Beating Second Place Treynor

Sports

October 9th, 2025 by Christian Adams

Another day means another win for the Riverside Bulldogs as they defeated the Treynor Cardinals 3-0 on Thursday night. Although the Bulldogs won all three sets, the Cardinals didn’t make it easy. Neither side was able to go on long, extended runs, as the middle part of all three sets went back and forth. However, Riverside always seemed to find the extra gear to pull away at the end.

As has been the case all season, it was a total team effort for Riverside. Defensively, four bulldogs had ten or more digs. Sophia Fenner led the team with 14, including two that seemed improbable at best, to keep rallies alive.  Up front, sophomore Vivian Gross continues to be a factor as both she and Arabella Singleton had three blocks. Offensively, the combination of Bentley Rone, Lily Reed, Sydney Somers, and Ashley Kelley was a perfect mix of finesse and power. Somers provided the power, leading the way with 16 kills. Rone and Kelly were precise with their sets, with both picking up double-digit assists, which also opened the door for Rone to pick up some kills with her unassuming pushovers that continuously put Treynor in a tough spot.

Although the Bulldogs weren’t dominant, nothing was too big for them to handle. They weren’t behind very often, but when they were, it wasn’t for long. The only question mark in the match was the struggles Treynor had with service errors, and with sets of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-22, it could’ve changed the course of a set or two. However, it likely wouldn’t have changed the outcome as Riverisde was the better team.

Riverside is in the midst of its toughest stretch of the season, and head coach Brooke Flathers credited her team’s response to the challenges that have been thrown their way, especially against the second-place team in the conference.

Fenner’s defensive skills continue to be impressive, and this has a lot to do with her efforts in practice.

The pushover ball from Rone not only looked good, but was successful. The success of the play has a lot to do with how good Rone is at distributing, but it is also something the back row looks to set up for her.

With the end of the season in sight, the goal for the Bulldogs remains the focus for this team, and despite their 28-0 record, it doesn’t appear that complacency will be an issue.

The Bulldogs will compete in the CAM tournament on Saturday before beginning the Western Iowa Conference tournament next week.

Feenstra talks about government shutdown

News

October 9th, 2025 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa Congressman Randy Feenstra says with each passing day, more Iowans are being affected by the federal government shutdown. Feenstra cites the closure of Farm Service Agency offices as an example. “Farmers are doing harvest. They need their acreage paperwork processed,” Feenstra said. “Our troops are not going to get paid as of October 15, which is absolutely appalling to me.” Feenstra says he and other House Republicans met by phone today (Thursday).

“We can’t negotiate with ourselves,” Feenstra said. “I mean, we’re really waiting on six senators from the Democratic Party to come along and say, ‘Yeah, let’s get this country back open again and let’s talk about what we want to do.'” House Republicans passed a spending plan on September 19th to fund the federal government through mid-November. “I am so frustrated because this is all about partisan antics,” Feenstra says. “We’re not asking for anything. We didn’t add anything to the bill. We’re just simply saying, ‘Can we continue the same budget that we always had?’ And the Democrats said, ‘No, we want to add $1.5 trillion more.’ Just pass the current budget. That’s all we’re asking.”

Feenstra says the status quo spending plan is as far as House Republicans will go. “We already have $37 trillion of debt and we’re not going to go down that path…They’re asking for so much and we can’t do it as a country,” Feenstra said. “…We’re at a very dividing marker in our country right now. We’re not asking for anything. They’re asking for a lot and, you know, we’re going to keep it shut down for the sake of our country and the taxpayers to get this right.” Senate Democrats have called for including an extension of tax credits for about 22 million Americans who use the Affordable Care Act marketplace to buy insurance.

“Health care and the tax credits and all that stuff really doesn’t end until December 31, so we have time to negotiate and talk, but we want to do it while government is open,” Feenstra says. “And they’re saying: ‘Nope. We’re going to keep government shut down.'” Feenstra, a Republican from Hull, formed an exploratory committee this spring to begin raising money for a race for governor and is expected to formally launch his campaign soon.
