(Cerro Gordo County, IA) – The Iowa State Patrol, Sunday afternoon, released the names of person involved in a fatal collision Saturday morning between an SUV and a car in northern Iowa. The accident happened at around 9:25-a.m. at 330th Street and Highway 65, south of the Cerro Gordo and Worth County line, south of Manly (IA).
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2016 Lincoln MKS driven by 85-year-old Joseph T. Costello, of Plymouth (IA), was traveling east on 330th Street at the same time a 2000 Ford Expedition SUV driven by 34-year-old Valinda M. Imus, of Northwood (IA), was traveling south on Highway 65. As the car was traveling through the intersection, it was struck on the driver’s side by the SUV. Joseph Costello died at the scene from his injuries.
Valinda Imus, and two others – 83-year-old Carol J. Costello, of Plymouth, and 30-year-old Deandre D. Harvey, of Fort Dodge – were injured in the crash and transported by Mason City Fire Department Ambulance to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. The Patrol says Valinda Imus and Deandre Harvey were not wearing seat belts.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. The Cerro Gordo and Worth County Sheriff’s Departments, Manly Fire and Rescue and Mason City Fire Department all assisted the Patrol at the crash scene.
(Des Moines, Iowa) – Speculation over who President Trump would endorse for Iowa’s Third District Congressional seat in Washington, D-C, ended Friday night, when he endorsed Republican Representative Zach Nunn, from Bondurant.
Posting on his website Truth Social, Trump said Nunn would run for re-election, ending several months of speculation that swirled around Nunn’s interest in running for governor in Iowa. ““Just spoke to Great Combat Veteran Zach Nunn, and he is committed to the mission of, HOLDING THE MAJORITY. He is a team player, with a tremendous future—And 100% MAGA,” posted the president on his Truth Social Account. “Zach needs our full support to win Iowa-03. He is fighting for the Farmer, and everything else that Iowa stands for, including, of course, Lower Taxes, and our always under siege Second Amendment. Zach Nunn has my Complete and Total Endorsement. HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”
After Governor Kim Reynolds ended her re-election campaign in April, Nunn expressed interest in running for governor. He later announced that he would not run for governor. Another Republican, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced last week that she would also not be running for governor.

Had he chosen to run for governor, Nunn could have faced a challenge from fellow U-S Representative and 4th District Republican Randy Feenstra, from Hull. Feenstra, who hasn’t yet officially announced his campaign, has raised more than $3 million and racked up endorsements from prominent Republicans (U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, U.S. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, and Lt. Governor Chris Cournoyer).
State Representative Eddie Andrews, a Republican from Johnston, and former state representative Brad Sherman, a Republican from Williamsburg, had previously announced their campaigns. State Senator Mike Bousselot, a Republican from Ankeny, has not launched his campaign yet and remains in the exploratory phase as he raises money.
Nunn is the only declared Republican candidate for his Third District seat. Two Democrats already began their campaigns: state Representative Jennifer Konfrst of Windsor Heights, and state Senate Sarah Trone Garriott of West Des Moines.
National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Emily Tuttle said in a press release, “Combat veteran Zach Nunn has a proven record of results for this community, and that’s why Iowans will send him back to Congress next year.”
(Clear Lake, Iowa) – A vehicle being pursued by law enforcement early this (Sunday) morning in Cerro Gordo County, crashed, resulting in the death of a person from Forest City. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2015 Ford Fusion driven by a 22-year-old, was traveling at a high rate of speed in Clear Lake as it was being pursued at around 1:40-a.m. The car went out of control and struck a tree at 4th Avenue South and S Shore Drive. The vehicle then struck an unoccupied house and two legally parked vehicles (a 2021 Nissan Rouge and a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country), before coming to rest.
The driver was transported to Mercy One Medical Center in Mason City, where they were pronounced deceased. Their name was not immediately released. Clear Lake Fire assisted at the accident scene.
(Atlantic, Iowa) – The start of the Cass County (Iowa) Fair is just a little more than a week and a-half away, and the static building will be bustling with activity throughout the fair. Along with being open to see all the great static exhibits members have been working on throughout the year, the building is also host to many competitions. During the week static exhibits will be on display along with Bucket of Junk exhibits.
The building will open for the first time from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, July 24th. When the building opens you will be able to see the static exhibits for the first time including which exhibits were chosen for State Fair. Also during this time is the 4-H Food Sale, which will be taking place in the lobby of the Community Center and is free will donation for food made by 4-Hers that will be judged Wednesday, July 23rd. Building hours can be found below along with a schedule of events that are being held each day. 
You’re invited to come out and support the fair exhibitors as they showcase the skills and exhibits they have been practicing and building all year. Static Exhibits are projects youth have created this past year as an active growth of their areas of interest. These are a sample of learning youth have achieved. They talk to a judge about what their goal was before they started, the process they went through, and what they learned working towards their goals.
The exhibits may include food, photos, creative signs, posters, or displays and much more. Come see the variety of learning 4-H can offer for young people.

(Des Moines, Iowa) – Officials with the National Weather Service, Saturday confirmed their data indicates at least two tornadoes formed over Iowa, Friday afternoon. The first occurred in southwest Iowa at around 3:45-p.m., northeast of Clarinda. That tornado was short-lived, and therefore was not rated. Officials said it was not part of a Super-Cell thunderstorm, and no damage was reported.
A second, damage producing tornado formed on the southwest side of Davenport, at around 5-p.m., Friday. It was 7.6-miles long and 50o-yards wide. The twister traveled up the western edge of the city for about 10-minutes before it dissipated. While it was on the ground, it hit an RV dealership, blew-over multiple motorhomes and campers, and snapped or uprooted many trees.
The Davenport tornado was rated an EF-2 on the Fujita Scale, with peak winds estimated at 120 miles per hour. Survey crews from the National Weather Service in Davenport planned to make additional storm assessments in the area today (Sunday).
Friday’s tornadoes bring the total number of twisters in Iowa this year, to eight, which is significantly less than the 112 tornadoes that formed during by this time last year. 2024 saw the highest number of tornadoes ever recorded in the State.
Friday’ storms also brought widespread flash flooding to several locations in eastern Iowa, with significant flash flooding in Davenport, where a rare, Flash Flood Emergency warning was issued just before 5:30-p.m., Friday, with water rising rapidly in homes and businesses in downtown Davenport. Rainfall of anywhere from 2- to 6-inches in less than four-hours fell across eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois and northeast Missouri during the severe weather event.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Swimming is not recommended at over a dozen Iowa beaches. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources report suggests avoiding these 14 beaches, all of which have E. coli levels that are too high and indicate other bacteria. They are as follows:
Last week, swimming was not recommended at 12 Iowa beaches. The DNR conducts weekly tests at more than three dozen public swimming beaches between the week before Memorial Day through Labor Day.
(Guthrie Center, Iowa) – The Guthrie Center Community School District Board of Education is set to hold a Special Meeting Monday morning, in the AC/GC Superintendent’s Office. The purpose of the 6:45-a.m. session is discussion, with regard to “Desired Qualities and Strengths for the Next High School Principal.” No other information was released.
The Guthrie Center Board announced in May, 2024, the appointment of Brian Sauser as the new Principal for the 2024-25 School Year. He succeeded Ethan Lensch.
Sauser previously worked as a special education teacher and head football coach at Ames High School. He has over 25 years of experience in education and leadership
(Radio Iowa) – Governor Kim Reynolds says a new collaboration between Iowa’s social services agency and a network of evangelical churches is a revolutionary approach that will be mimicked in other states.

Reynolds spoke at The Family Leader’s annual summit — a few hours after the organization’s director of church engagement and Iowa Department of Health and Human Services director were on stage discussing the partnership.
Reynolds announced in April she would not seek reelection and grew emotional this (Friday) afternoon as she was ending her speech.
Reynolds told the crowd she looks forward to spending time with her family once she leaves office, but Reynolds says she intends to find some way to stay involved in the public sphere once her term as governor ends in early 2027.
Adair, IA (July 11, 2025) — Officials with ITC Midwest says the company has committed $5,000 through a “Power of Connection” grant, to support Little Smiles & Company’s initiative: Investing in the Future of Childcare Options in Adair & Surrounding Communities. This funding, the company says, will enable a comprehensive childcare market analysis and financial modeling consultation to address the growing childcare needs in Adair, Casey and nearby areas.
Little Smiles & Company is a state-licensed childcare center in Adair, currently serving approximately 30 children from the region. Due to recent changes in the Department of Health and Human Services’ age grouping policies and a growing wait-list, the center – alongside the City of Adair and the Adair-Casey School District – identified the need to explore expansion options to better support working families and ensure long-term sustainability.

Their analysis will guide data-based decisions to improve access to affordable and quality childcare and strengthen provider retention in the region.
“Childcare is essential to the vitality of rural communities,” said ITC Midwest President Dusky Terry. “We are proud to support Adair’s efforts to create sustainable solutions that benefit families, employers and the future of the community.”
