Police in Perry say one person has been detained in connection with an investigation into a double homicide. Officers called to 802 6th Street in Perry at around 7:48-a.m. Saturday, found three victims. Two of the victims were deceased, the third was flown to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. The names of the victims and the person being questioned had not been released as of early Sunday afternoon.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Perry Police in handling the investigation.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Three Iowa Supreme Court justices who helped legalize gay marriage in the state seven years ago will face voters on Nov. 8 for the first time since the ruling, but they are refusing to campaign for their jobs because they argue the courts should remain above politics.

Chief Justice Mark Cady and Justices Daryl Hecht and Brent Appel need a simple majority of votes to remain on the bench. They’re among seven justices to rule unanimously in 2009 that same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in Iowa. Three others were removed from the bench in 2010 after Christian conservatives spent $1 million to defeat them. A campaign that aggressive hasn’t been organized this year.

The seventh justice on the gay marriage decision received enough votes to stay in 2012.

The City of Atlantic’s Board of Adjustment is set to meet early Monday (Nov. 14th) morning to hold a public hearing on a variance application. Robert Hansen, at 300 Maple Street, has filed an application seeking a variance that would allow for the construction of a residential addition to a non-conforming property. The meeting and related Public Hearing are set to begin at 7:30-a.m. Monday, in the Council’s Chambers at City Hall.

No injuries were reported after a bus carrying passengers to Kansas City caught fire Friday morning in Interstate 29, in Harrison County. According to the sheriff’s office, a rear tire blew out on the motor coach, near Missouri Valley. The bus made it to a rest stop where flames from the tire/wheel caused the bus to become fully engulfed in flames.

The Sioux City company that owns the bus made other arrangements to transport the 22 passengers to their destination.

Police in Red Oak say a man was arrested Saturday afternoon on a Theft charge. 29-year old Benjamin William Hrabik, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 2:15-p.m. in the 400 block of N. 2nd Street, for Theft in the 5th Degree.  Hrabik was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond.

CARROLL, Iowa (AP) — A newspaper says two Carroll County Sheriff’s employees used county equipment and other resources to promote and conduct gun classes from which they collected tens of thousands of dollars. The Carroll Daily Times Herald reports that Deputy Tom Fransen and Administrative Assistant Shanna Balukoff have held the classes since December 2010, charging $50 per person. State law bans public employees from using public resources for personal gain. The state auditor’s office has begun an investigation.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A 14-year-old boy shot earlier this week while riding in a car in downtown Des Moines has died. A woman speaking for Yore Thour Jieng’s family says the teen died Saturday at Blank Children’s Hospital. The woman, Jamie Buelt, said Saturday that funeral arrangements were pending. Police have said Yore was in a car being driven by a relative when he suffered a gunshot wound Monday evening.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An 88-year-old man with previous sex abuse convictions could spend the rest of his life in prison after being accused of grabbing a state mental-hospital worker between the legs. The Des Moines Register reports that William Cubbage faces a Nov. 15 hearing to decide whether he’s competent to stand trial. Cubbage gained notoriety after he was accused in 2011 of molesting a 95-year-old woman at a Pomeroy nursing home.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A 12-year-old Des Moines boy hit by a car while crossing a city street has died. Des Moines police say Josef Fuller died Friday night at a hospital. Investigators say he had been crossing Southwest Ninth Street before 7 a.m. Thursday when he was hit by a car. Officials say it was dark when the accident occurred. Investigators have not said what other factors might have contributed to the incident.

As first reported by the Storm Lake Times, Cubbage could get life if convicted of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse because of his previous convictions.

Those who attend the classes get a certificate they can use to obtain a permit from the sheriff’s office to openly carry a firearm.

The county received none of the money from the classes, even though the certificates say “Sponsored by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.” State law bans public employees from using public resources for personal gain, and the state auditor’s office has begun an investigation.
