Short Secures Hawkeye Overtime Win

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY – Milly Short propelled the 11th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team over No. 15 Rutgers with her fourth goal of the season to win in overtime on Sunday afternoon.

Rutgers led the scoring in the first period with an early goal at 1:18 to put the Scarlet Knights up, followed by a second at 12:23 to give them a 2-0 lead.

Iowa’s Dionne van Aalsum put the Hawkeyes on the board at 26:32 on a rebounded penalty corner shot assisted by Frederique van Cleef. Van Aalsum rallied to tie up the score 2-2 in the third period with her second goal of the day off of a penalty corner assisted by Felicia Zonnenberg.

The Scarlet Knights were able to regain the lead for Rutgers in the fourth period off a penalty corner.

The Hawkeyes answered six minutes later with just over five minutes left in the contest with Gia Whalen scoring off an assist by Lexie Haig to send the game into overtime.

3:44 into overtime, Iowa’s Milly Short was able to find the back of the net with an assist from Zonnenberg to close out the win.

Iowa outshot Rutgers 16-to-10 and had eight corners compared to their five. Mia Magnotta had two saves on the day.

  • Van Aalsum has scored at least one goal in 11-of-13 games this season.
  • Zonnenberg’s two assists improves her team-leading total to 12.
  • The Hawkeyes now have three ranked wins on the season.
