COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Iowa cross country wrapped up the regular season at the Pre-Nationals Invitational on the Gans Creek Cross Country Course on Friday morning.
Sophomores Kyle Montgomery and Elena Torres led the Hawkeyes in their respective races.
The Iowa women walked away with six new personal bests in the 6,000 meters at the Pre-Nationals Invite. They were led by sophomore Elena Torres, who claimed a new personal record with a time of 20:49.7. Her new lifetime best was a ten-second improvement from her previous best set at last season’s Big Ten Championships. Torres finished as the top Hawkeye in every regular season meet this season.
Sophomore Hillary Trainor followed her strong performance from two weeks ago with another solid finish. She was right behind Torres with a personal-best 21:05.5. Jalyssa Blazek finished the regular season with a 21:40.0 lifetime best and clinched scoring status for the Hawkeyes in all four meets. Freshman Ella Magallan notched an over 1:45 personal best in the regular season finale. Audra Soderlind rounded out the scoring for the Hawkeyes and updated her career best, crossing the line in 22:03.7. Sophomore Julia Gehl recorded her own personal best with a 23:09.3. The team placed 25th with 690 points.
In the men’s 8,000 meters, sophomore Kyle Montgomery was the top finisher for the Hawkeyes for the first time this season. He finished with a time of 25:08.8. Montgomery has been a consistent top-five runner for the men’s team, scoring in all four regular season meets.
Seniors Carson Houg (25:17.9) and Hayden Kuhn (25:31.6) were the second and third Hawkeyes to cross the line, respectively. Freshman Elias Arbuckle, with a time of 25:33.3, continued his streak of placing in the top five for the Hawkeyes in each meet this season. The team placed 30th with 778 points.
Six underclassmen scored for the Hawkeyes between the two races on Friday. This matched a season high in underclassmen point production, dating back to the Hawkeye Invite on Sept. 5.
