IOWA CITY, Iowa — Five different Hawkeyes scored to lead No. 15 Iowa to an 8-1 win over Queen’s University (N.C.) on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.
Fréderique van Cleef opened the scoring unassisted at 3:36, netting her second goal of the season to give Iowa an early lead.
The Hawkeyes continued their first-half dominance with goals from Tess Reed and Felicia Zonnenburg (each their second of the season) and Dionne van
Aalsum, who tallied her eighth and ninth goals of the season in the first half. Iowa entered halftime with a commanding 4-0 advantage.
Queen’s (0-2) got on the board in the third quarter with a goal from Maddie Just, but van Aalsum responded with her third of the day off a penalty corner to maintain Iowa’s momentum.
Milly Short added her first goal of the season later in the third, assisted by Zonnenburg, extending the lead to 7-1. Van Aalsum capped the scoring in the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the game, assisted by Zonnenburg and Gia Whalen.
Van Aalsum finished with four goals and eight shots on goal. Zonnenburg contributed three assists and one goal. Iowa outshot Queens 40-1 and held a 12-0 edge in penalty corners.
“We wanted to have our foot on the gas from the start and have a high level of possession,” head coach Lisa Cellucci said. “We wanted to see a lot of different combinations early on. Scoring early allowed us to put a lot of people into the game for the second quarter. After half, we wanted to try a different press that we hadn’t done yet. This will come into play next weekend, so that was a big focus.”
Goalkeeper Mia Magnotta earned the win for Iowa (3-1), playing all 60 minutes without facing a shot on goal until the third quarter.
Iowa travels to Louisville, Kentucky, to face Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. CT.
