2 Hawkeyes Tabbed for Watch Lists
August 8th, 2025 by Jack McGonigal
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Logan Jones and junior Zach Ortwerth were named to the Rimington Trophy and John Mackey Award watch lists, respectively, on Friday. The Rimington Trophy is awarded annually to the nation’s top center, while the Mackey Award is presented to the country’s most outstanding tight end.
Jones (6-foot-3, 302-pounds) was also named to the Rimington preseason list the last two seasons. Former Hawkeye Tyler Linderbaum was the 2021 Rimington Trophy recipient.
Jones was previously tabbed for the Outland Trophy Watch List earlier this month, presented to the top offensive lineman in the country.
The Council Bluffs, Iowa, native started 12 games as a junior and was a first-team all-conference selection and an honorable mention All-American by Phil Steele in 2024. The native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, anchored the Hawkeye offensive line that allowed just 17 sacks and helped Iowa rush for 2,564 yards, the most since 2002. Jones was tabbed a preseason second-team All-American by Walter Camp, and a third-team All-American by Athlon and Phil Steele earlier this month.
The center with the most first team votes on three All-America teams (Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America) will determine the winner of the Rimington Trophy. The award is named after Nebraska center Dave Rimington, who is a two-time All-American, College Football Hall of Fame inductee, and the only college football player to win the Outland Trophy twice.
Ortwerth (6-foot-4, 245 pounds) played in all 13 games a season ago, while logging four starts. He had 11 catches for 133 yards with a career-high 66 yards in a 42-10 win over Wisconsin in 2024. The St. Louis native earned a Coaches Appreciate Award after his sophomore year.
Iowa has had two previous winners of the Mackey Award: Dallas Clark in 2002 and T.J. Hockenson in 2018. Tony Moeaki (2009), Allen Reisner (2010) and Noah Fant (2018) were semifinalists for the award, while Sam LaPorta was one of three finalists in 2022.
The Hawkeyes kickoff the season against UAlbany on Aug. 30, at Kinnick Stadium beginning at 5 p.m. (CT). Tickets are available for purchase for the season opener at hawkeyesports.com/tickets.
