The Nodaway Valley baseball team defeated the Griswold Tigers Wednesday night 7-2 in Griswold. The Wolverines came out early plating a run in the first inning with back-to-back singles from Senior Paul Berg and Junior Remington Woosley to bring Berg home. Woosley was the starting pitcher for Nodaway Valley, striking out five in five innings of work. Head Coach Dan Jameson gave credit to his defense behind Woosley.

Meanwhile, Junior Kolbe Klindt started on the bump for Griswold and had a smooth second and third inning keeping the Wolverines at one run through three. In the fourth, Nodaway Valley became patient. Drawing three consecutive walks to begin the inning and hitting two batters later on required a pitching change. Therefore, three more Nodaway Valley players were able to score giving the Wolverines a 4-0 lead after four.

In the fifth, Sophomore Caiden Turner shut down Nodaway Valley by striking out the side. The Tiger offense finally came alive with a leadoff double off the bat of Junior Wyatt Silk. Silk was eventually driven in off of leadoff hitter, Bode Wyman’s single down the third base line. Despite the shutout being erased, Woosley didn’t lose composure and still possessed full confidence in his defense.

The scoring continued for the Wolverines in the sixth by drawing two consecutive walks to begin followed by Berg reaching on an error. Two hard hit balls off of the bats of Woosley and Senior Eli Harris brought in all three runners reaching before the pair of hits. Woosley says the double felt great off of the stick.

Later in the sixth, Griswold has the bases loaded and a runner in after three consecutive walks and a hit batsman. Junior Ty Strode relieved Woosley of his duties on the mind and came into a troubling bases loaded zero outs situation. Wyatt Silk fresh of a double his last time steps into the box and rips a liner to Second Baseman Eli Harris. Harris makes a dazzling catch and even picks off the runner at first as he was too far off the bag for an incredible double play. Nodaway Valley was able to escape trouble with only one run crossing safely.

Nodaway Valley improves to 1-3 on the season and Jameson believes this is exactly what his team needed.

The Wolverines are back at home in a Friday contest against Central Decatur while the Tigers will host ACGC on Thursday.
