The Atlantic softball team defeated the Shenendoah Fillies Thursday night 9-1 in six innings. The duo of Sophomore Peyton McLaren and Junior Zoey Kirchhoff split innings in the circle, going scoreless in the last five frames. Junior McKenna Schroeder got on base all four times, including a pair of doubles. Lone Senior McKenna Sonntag ended the game with a walk-0ff two-run home run to left field. Head Coach Terry Hinzmann complimented the way Schroeder has adjusted in different spots in the order.

In the top of the first, Shenendoah capitalized on an early Atlantic error to go ahead 1-0. In each of the first two innings, the Trojans left runners in scoring position and trailed 1-0 after two.

In the third, the bats started to come alive for Atlantic. Schroeder doubled followed by a Sonntag RBI single to tie the game. Later in the inning, Lila Wiederstein drove in a pair with a sneaky single down the left field line. A multi run lead in Atlantic’s back pocket made the pitching transition from McLaren to Kirkhhoff after the fourth much smoother.

McLaren also helped herself out at the plate in the fifth with an RBI triple to score Wiederstein and believes her plate approaches has improved throughout the course of the season.

In the two innings Kirkhhoff pitched, she struck out two and allowed just two baserunners. Sonntag believes everybody gets better with trusted pitchers in the circle.

In the sixth, Schroeder led off with a walk followed up by a two-run home run off the bat of Sonntagg for her first walk-off home run of her career.

The Trojans are set to head to the Fort Dodge Invite Friday, where the competition will be top tier.

Atlantic is currently 16-9 this season and head into the weekend on a six-game win streak.
