IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field’s Abraham Vogelsang was named the Big Ten Men’s Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
The freshman from Oslo, Norway, earned the honor after an outstanding performance at the Drake Relays, where he scored 7,874 points to place third in the decathlon. Vogelsang’s performance moved him to second all-time in Iowa history for the event. He recorded five personal bests and placed in the top three in four of the ten events.
Vogelsang is the top-ranked freshman in the country and third overall in NCAA Division 1 in the decathlon. He is one of just two freshmen currently ranked in the top 30.
This recognition marks Iowa’s fifth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award during the outdoor season. Maria Arboleda, Duke Faley, Bryce Ruland, and Chioma Nwachukwu have each earned the honor earlier this spring. Vogelsang was previously named Big Ten Freshman of the Year for the indoor season following an impressive rookie campaign.
The Hawkeyes host the Musco Twilight meet, celebrating senior day in Coralville at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Outdoor Track and Field Complex. Action begins Friday, April 2 and continues Saturday, April 3.
