SEATTLE – The University of Iowa baseball team fell to Washington, 4-3, on Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Iowa (31-14, 20-5) batted .219 and left seven runners on base. The Hawkeyes held the Huskies to a .115 batting average.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when fifth-year Andy Nelson hit his third home run in the last three games. Gable Mitchell hit an RBI sac fly to put the Hawkeyes ahead, 2-0, in the fifth.
Washington (26-21, 14-8) tied it at two in the bottom of the fifth. Iowa regained the lead when Blake Guerinand Kooper Schulte hit back-to-back doubles. The Huskies knotted the game again in the bottom of the seventh and scored the winning run on a saftey squeeze bunt with two outs in the bottom of ninth.
LHP Cade Obermueller started on the hill. He fanned nine Huskies and gave up just two hits but was pulled in the fifth inning after surrendering five free bases and allowing Washginton to knot the game at two apiece.
With his seventh strikeout of the game, Obermueller moved into eighth-place in program history for single-season strikeouts (92), surpassing his father, Wes Obermueller, on the list. Wes Obermueller, current Director of Player Development, pitched for the Hawkeyes from 1997-1999 before being selected by Kansas City in the second round of the MLB Draft.
Anthony Watts came out of the bullpen and pitched 3.2 innings. He gave up two runs on zero hits and struck out six. Brant Hogue came in to pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
