Atlantic Police investigate alleged social media threat; 11-year-old charged with Threats of Terrorism

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The Atlantic Police Department reports a juvenile faces a felony, Threats of Terrorism charge, following an investigation today (Wednesday) into a reported threat that was allegedly posted on social media. During the investigation into the incident, all parties involved were able to be contacted prior to school beginning. The investigation found that the threat is not credible and students and staff were not in danger to attend school today. However, due to the seriousness of the threat and the disruption to the school and learning environment, an 11 -year-old juvenile was taken into custody and has been charged with Threats of Terrorism.
The Atlantic Police Department will provide heightened presence at the ACSD buildings for the rest of the week. The Atlantic Police Department worked alongside the Atlantic Community School District during the investigation. We have also made contact with the Iowa Governor’s School Safety Bureau in regards to the incident.No other details are being released at this time.
