(Greenfield, Iowa) – Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater, Wednesday, issued a statement on social media with regard to a recent Facebook post from a female resident of the county, who encountered a suspicious set of circumstances north of Fontanelle Sunday night. Vandewater said the driver of the other vehicle involved called into the Sheriff’s Office and spoke with the Sheriff about the subject. Vandewater following the conversation with that individual, he feels “confident that there was no criminal intent on the part of the motorist who was pulled over to the side of the road or the passenger of that vehicle who has a physical disability and had fallen down,” and that he is “comfortable with the drivers explanation of the events.”
He offered a couple of takeaways from the scenario. Sheriff Vandewater said “I applaud the female who made the post as she trusted her instincts and her “gut” reaction and left the area when things didn’t feel quite right. Fantastic! If the hair stands up on the back of your neck, there is probably a reason. Go with your instincts. “Another reality is that the world seems like a crazy place right now and it probably is. As a reminder, if you come across what appears to be a stranded motorist in an isolated area, especially late at night or anytime of the day for that matter, just give us a call and let me or my deputies go investigate the situation or help the stranded motorist…..that’s what we’re here for.
“Sometimes,” he said, “things aren’t what they appear to be, sometimes they are. Let us do the checking for you. But either way, we continue to need you to call us as you are our eyes and ears in the community. One or even two deputies cannot be everywhere in the county at at one time, especially the lesser traveled Level “B” and gravel roads. We are much less effective without your help.” Sheriff Vandewater concluded his statement by saying “I hope this update puts some of you at ease.”
