The Griswold Tigers girls basketball team kicked off the first game of a double-header against the Essex Trojans with a 53-26 victory. Defensively, the Tigers brought their A-game forcing numerous turnovers. Offensively, it was a team effort as nine Tigers found the scoresheet.  After getting out to an early lead, Griswold never trailed on the way to their sixth win of the season.

On a night dedicated to seniors, head coach Aaron Houser went with an all-senior starting lineup that did not disappoint. The Tigers started the game on a 5-0 run to take an early lead. Brenna Tye led the charge with two field goals in the opening quarter as all five senior starters chipped in. By the end of the first frame, Griswold had established a 10 point cushion. As Griswold continued to build their lead in the second quarter, it was the defense continued to shine. The Tigers allowed just two points in the first quarter and only four in the second. Throughout the game, Griswold’s high-pressure defense forced Essex into numerous turnovers, especially off of inbounds. By the end of the first half, Griswold was in full control of the game. Abby Gohlinhorst knocked down three field goals in the first half to help the Tigers to a 24-6 lead at the break.

The second half continued to see the Tigers distribute the ball. Four Tigers chipped in two field goals, including Abby Gohlinghorst, who finished the game with 10 points. Addison Adams also downed a pair of long balls to bring her total to 10. All in all, six Tigers finished the night with at least six points. Although the Trojans’ offense was more productive in the second half, Griswold kept their lead steady as they captured a solid 53-26 win. Head coach Aaron Houser was extremely proud of the seniors and the effort they put forth.

Regardless of who was on the floor, the Griswold defense locked down Essex and Houser credited the whole team.

Heading into the home stretch of the season, Houser said his team is continuing to improve and that he wants them to continue to compete as the postseason nears.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday when they head on the road to face Sidney.
