CORALVILLE, IA — The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team had a strong start on day one of the Soldier Salute on Sunday at Xtream Arena with 19 athletes advancing to day two. The Hawkeyes sit in first place in the team standings with 45 points.

In Session I, the Hawkeyes went 14-3 with four pins, seven technical falls and three decisions. Cali Leng (124), Lilly Luft (138) and Cadence Diduch (138) advanced to the quarterfinals. Luft made her season debut with a 5-2 decision over Michaela Rankin from Brock University. At the end of Session I, the Hawkeyes led the team race with 14 points.

The Hawkeyes went 30-7 In Session II with 12 pins, 13 technical falls and five decisions. Leng advanced to the semifinals with a, 14-11, comeback win over Anna Krejsa of Life University. Diduch also reached the semis after a 10-0 tech. fall against Esperanza Almazan from William Penn.

Second ranked Sterling Dias went 2-1 in pool play at 103 pounds to reach the quarterfinals. At 110 pounds, Valarie Solorio, No. 2 Ava Bayless and No. 5 Emilie Gonzalez each went undefeated in pool play to reach the quarterfinal round. First-ranked Brianna Gonzalez earned three wins in pool play to make the quarterfinals at 117 pounds.

Allie Baudhuin went 3-0, and Emily Frost went 2-0 in pool play to reach the quarterfinals at 131 pounds. Top-ranked Reese Larramendy and third-ranked Macey Kilty both went undefeated in pool play to reach the 145-pound quarterfinals. At 160 pounds, second-ranked Kennedy Blades earned two tech. falls in pool play to reach the quarters. No. 1 Kylie Welker went 3-0, and No. 7 Naomi Simon went 2-0 in pool play to make the quarterfinals at 180 pounds. At 207, all four Hawkeye wrestlers reached the quarterfinals, including top-ranked Jaycee Foeller, fifth-ranked Alivia White, Katja Osteen and Sam Calkins.

Ava Rose and Mia Goodwin (Unattached) are still alive in wrestlebacks at 124 pounds.

“The Soldier Salute is a competitive tournament every year, and it creates good opportunity for our team. It’s great for our team to have the support of the fans being so close to home. The team feeds off of the energy, and I think we saw that play out on the mats today. We had a lot of high-level matches today, and I’m excited to see how we finish out the tournament tomorrow.”

The Hawkeyes will wrap up competition at the Soldier Salute on Monday. Session III is set for 11 a.m., and the tournament will conclude with Session IV at 5 p.m. All matches will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
