1 dead, 4 injured in a multiple-vehicle crash in east central Iowa

(Brooklyn, Iowa) – A multi-vehicle crash Friday evening in Poweshiek County resulted in the death of one person, and injuries to at least four others. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened on Interstate 80 southwest of Brooklyn, at around 5:20-p.m. The accident resulted in both the east & westbound lanes of the interstate being closed for more than three-hours.
The Patrol says a 2004 Ford Econoline van was traveling east on I-80 near mile marker 193, when it was rear-ended by a 2019 Volvo truck. The impact caused the van to go out of control and cross through the median into oncoming traffic, before colliding with a westbound 2019 Volvo truck.
The person who died was from Chicago, IL. Their name was being withheld by the ISP pending notification of family. Those injured in the crash were identified as:
34-year-old Edblin Sanchez-Cruz, 39-year-old Josis Sanchez-Cruz, and 22-year-old Jerson Almendares (the driver of the van), all from Green Bay, WI., and the driver of the semi that rear-ended the van, 43-year-old Jeremy Armstrong, of Abingdon, IL. The name of the 29-year-old westbound semi driver (From Chicago) was not released.
The injured were transported by Brooklyn Ambulance to the Grinnell Regional Hospital. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office and Brooklyn Fire and Rescue.
