Atlantic XC competes in Hawkeye 10 Conference Championship

The Atlantic Trojan Cross Country team performed well at Glenwood Lake Park in the Hawkeye 10 Conference Championship Wednesday afternoon. The Trojan girls would take third place and the boys would go on to take sixth. Glenwood took first place on the girls’ side followed by Lewis Central and on the boys’ side Lewis Central took first place as they beat second play Glenwood by four points. The top girl’s runner of the night was Grace Berglund from Glenwood and Claire Pellett led the way for the Trojan girls setting a personal best with 19:09.61 in route to fourth place. Pellett said this meet will help prepare her team for next week’s state qualifier.

The rest of the girl’s team ran well with Belle Berg in 14th, Katrina Williams in 18th, Hailey Huffman in 29th, Megan Birge in 30th, Makenna Schroeder in 31st, and Mariah Huffman 40th. Pellett said the team knew it was going to be a tough race because of the level of talent in the Hawkeye 10 conference.

Coach Dan Vargason was very happy with his girl’s tough performance Tuesday.

On the boys’ side Ethan Eichhorn from Lewis Central took the individual title. Eichhorn’s performance helped lead Lewis Central to the boys’ team title as well. Atlantic’s top boy runner was junior Devon Fields who came in 15th. Bennett Whetstone would come in 23rd, Alex Sonntag 27th, Rickie Fields 29th, Luke Irlmeier 34th, Tyrell Williams 40th, Xander Cook 62nd. Fields said he wasn’t feeling confident from the start but that changed mid race.

Overall, Head Coach Dan Vargason was much happier with his boys than their previous meet.
