The Nebraska Cornhuskers spoiled the Iowa Hawkeye’s hopes of solidifying a spot in the Big Ten Championship game with a 24-17 win on Friday afternoon in Iowa City.

The Huskers took advantage of Iowa turnovers to jump out to an early lead. Iowa starting quarterback Spencer Petras was hit and lost a fumble that lead to a Nebraska 21-yard field goal. Petras was injured and Alex Padilla took over the position for the rest of the game. He gave up a fumble that led to Nebraska’s second touchdown.

Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson threw touchdown passes of 87 and 18 yards to Trey Palmer in the first half to put Nebraska up 17-0 at the break. Thompson then hit Marcus Washington on a 14-yard score in the third to build the lead to 24-0. Iowa rallied back within a score with a couple of long touchdown drives and a Drew Stevens field goal with 5:41 left. The Hawkeyes got the ball twice in the final minutes to try to drive to tie the game but Alex Padilla threw incomplete on 4th down both possessions to seal the Nebraska win.

Nebraska won the Heroes trophy for the first time in 8 seasons and finish the year at 4-8.

Iowa falls to 7-5 and will now wait and see their Big Ten West fate. The Hawkeyes now need losses by Purdue and Illinois on Saturday to have a chance at back-to-back west division titles.
