Trojan LogoThe Atlantic tennis teams are gearing up for a new season with strong numbers. The girls team has 27 players out and the boys have a good number with 17 players.

The girls squad will look to replace some of their top players with the graduation of Tessa and Nellie Grooms, Genevieve Martinez, and Olivia Engler. Head Coach Mike McDermott said some players that did get some varsity experience will need to step up to take on bigger roles.

The boys team lost a top player in Grant Sturm but his brother Ethan will be counted on to lead the way.

Clevi Johnson has improved and slid into the number two spot early on. Bryan York and Hunter Weppler are also experienced players that will be key contributors. There will be some strong competition on both sides for the final varsity spots.

Coach McDermott said the early season work is a mixture of working on fundamentals and trying to formulate a lineup. He said early on in competition they aren’t as concerned with results as they are on effort and improvement. As the coach of both the boys and girls teams Coach McDermott said both squads help push each other.

The teams will open up the season on Tuesday, April 5th against Kuemper Catholic.
