Carson Bauer converted a huge three point play late and Audubon came up with a stop to defeat Riverside 69-67 in a 1A District 15 Quarterfinal on Monday in Avoca.

It was a great battle all game with both teams shooting the ball well and coming up with big plays. The lead changed 17 times and the game was tied on 9 occasions. After Grady Jeppesen hit a three to give Riverside the lead at 67-66, the Wheelers answered with a great pass from Braden Wessel to Carson Bauer on the opposite block. Bauer converted and got fouled. He connected on the free throw to put Audubon on top by two. Audubon took the ball back and missed the front end of a bonus opportunity but thought they were going back to the free throw line when Jackson Deist got a rebound and threw the ball back out to Edward Miller near center court. A foul was called but after a conference by the officials it was determined that Miller hadn’t established himself back on that side of the floor and a backcourt violation was called. Riverside had one last chance with 7 seconds left and Mason McCready couldn’t quite connect on a good look at three. Gavin Smith grabbed the rebound and heaved it downcourt to run out the clock.

Jackson Deist had a big game for the Wheelers with 25 points , including 6 makes from three. After the game he said he felt confident with his shot right away. He said they knew it would be a battle.

The Wheelers made some big hay along the baseline against the Bulldogs 1-3-1 zone and Deist said they tried to take advantage there.

Audubon improved to 9-13 on the season and advanced to the District Quarterfinals against AHSTW back on the same floor on Thursday at 8:00 p.m.

Riverside got 24 from Grady Jeppesen and 23 from Aiden Bell, who connected on 7 threes in the game. The Bulldogs finish their season at 12-10.
