62-yard field goal pushes Tech past Iowa State

Jonathan Garibay drilled a 62-yard field goal as time expired to defeat Iowa State 41-38 on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.

Freshman quarterback Donovan Smith had a phenomenal game in his first start, completing 25-32 passes for 322 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Smith put up the majority of his numbers in a first half spurt that got the Red Raiders up 28-7 at one point and 31-14 by the break.

The Iowa State defense buckled down in the second half and Brock Purdy rallied the Cyclones all the way back to a 38 all tie with one minute left. Purdy threw two touchdown passes to Charlie Kolar during the rally and Breece Hall added his third TD run of the game in the fourth quarter.

Smith got the Red Raiders to midfield in the final minute and Garibay drilled the long field goal. Texas Tech improved to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in Big 12 play.

Iowa State falls to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12. Next up for the Cyclones is a road trip to face Oklahoma at 11:00 a.m. next Saturday.
