(godrakebulldogs.com) Drake University junior forward Darnell Brodie has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Brodie, a Newark, N.J. native, had his first two career double-doubles on the week and three games with double-figure rebounds for the No. 25 Bulldogs. The transfer from Seton Hall averaged 10.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game with career-best performances in scoring and rebounding.

Brodie opened the week with his first career double-double with a then career-high 16 points and career-high 15 rebounds at Missouri State. He followed that with a 14-rebound night in the series finale at Missouri State.

He then opened the Illinois State series with a career-high 20 points on 10-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds. In Monday night’s 35-point win, he was needed for just 23 minutes to help the Bulldogs improve to 17-0 this season.

The honor is the third for the Bulldogs this season as ShanQuan Hemphill was twice named Newcomer of the Week in December.

Brodie and the rest of his teammates return to action this weekend for a two-game series at Valparaiso.
