Sioux City Man Charged With Motor Vehicle Theft Following I-29 Accident

ONAWA, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) reports a man from Sioux City faces two Motor Vehicle Theft charges, with additional charges possible, following a shots fired incident that took place, Sunday. At around 1:50-a.m., the Monona County Communications center received a call of an accident involving injuries and possible shot fired at the 118 mile marker of I-29.  Arriving officers found an accident scene involving a motorcycle and pickup, and during the investigation found that a subject had fired a gun at another vehicle while travelling down I-29.

The occupant of the pickup truck had fled the scene and later it was reported that someone had stolen a pickup from a farm residence close to the accident scene.  That pickup was found a short distance from the farm residence wrecked. The suspect then went to another residence where he stole another pickup and fled the area.  The suspect was caught in Sioux City in possession of the stolen pickup.

The suspect, 39-year-old Jayme R. Powell, of Sioux City, was arrested and charged with two counts of motor vehicle theft, and is currently being held in the Monona County Jail. The investigation is on-going and more charges may be filed at a later date.
