A passenger in a vehicle that struck a deer was struck by a car Friday night, in eastern Iowa’s Jackson County. The Iowa State Patrol reports 23-year old Matthew A. Bowling, of Maquoketa, died at a local hospital, after he was struck by a 2016 Chrysler 300 a little before 7-p.m.

The accident happened after a 2016 VW Jetta driven by 19-year old Paige Cupps, of Dubuque struck a deer on southbound Highway 62, at 256th Avenue. The vehicle came to rest in the northbound lane. Bowling was out inspecting the damage when he was hit by the Chrysler, which was unable to stop in-time.

The man was thrown into the ditch. The VW came to rest on the west shoulder of the road, while the other vehicle stopped on the east shoulder. The accident remains under investigation.
