IA COVID-19 update for 9/23/20: 9 more deaths, 1,059 additional case positives

The Iowa Department of Public Health’s Coronavirus dashboard, today (Wednesday), shows the number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 jumped from 1,284 Tuesday to 1,293 today, an increase of 9. Positive test results are up by 1,059 to 81,109 since the pandemic began. The data show four more positive cases in Cass County for a total of 140.

IDPH says says: 60,320 Iowans have recovered from the virus; 889 of the COVID-19 deaths involved persons with pre-existing conditions, and 674 deaths have occurred at Long-Term Care facilities. There have been 751,149 Iowans tested for the virus. IDPH reported 4.431 lab test results received in the previous day, with 456 positive results and 3,966 negative results (total negative results=667,444). IDPH reports a positivity rate of 10.9% over the last 14 days.

IDPH reported 41 long-term care facilities with coronavirus outbreaks, two more the previous day. There are 954 positive cases and 517 recoveries within those facilities.

Across the State, hospitalizations are up to 301. The number of patients with COVID-19 who are in an ICU is at 77;  59 people were admitted to a hospital since 10-a.m. Tuesday, and there are 37 patients on ventilators across the state.

In western/southwest Iowa, hospitals report 12 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 (1 more than on Tuesday); four are in an ICU; 3 were admitted to an area hospital with symptoms, and one person remains on a ventilator.

  • Shelby County: 250 cases; (233); 1 death.

  • Harrison County, 190 cases; (155); 2 deaths
  • Union County: 126 cases; (86); 3 deaths.
  • Mills County: 170 cases; (120); 1 death.
