DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A vote to fill a vacant Iowa House of Representatives seat for northwest Ames has been set for later this summer. Gov. Kim Reynolds on Friday announced the special election will be held Aug. 6 to replace former state Rep. Lisa Heddens. Heddens, a nine-term Democrat, resigned from her seat earlier this week to serve on the Story County Board of Supervisors, leaving the House District 46 seat open.

MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) — The murder trial for a former farmhand charged in the abduction and killing of 20-year-old University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts has been delayed. The Des Moines Register reported Friday that 25-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera will face trial Nov. 11 in Woodbury County. Rivera is accused of killing Tibbetts, who disappeared while out for a run July 18 in Brooklyn, Iowa. Investigators recovered her body a month later in a cornfield. Officials say she was stabbed to death.

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — A state workers union is criticizing what it says is the state’s lack of response to attacks on at least four employees at the state psychiatric care facility in eastern Iowa. The union says assaults over the past two weeks at the Independence Mental Health Institute include a nurse punched in the nose. Union President Danny Homan says the state is showing no urgency in addressing the incidents. A state spokesman says institute workplace injuries are down from last year.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — A man has been charged with murder in Oskaloosa, accused of killing his girlfriend’s baby son. Station WOI reports that Johnny Dale Jr. is being held on $1.25 million bail. The records don’t list an attorney for him. A court document says Dale told an investigator he’d grown frustrated with the baby and said he bounced the boy on an air mattress in an attempt to get him to sleep. Dale acknowledged that his actions likely injured the boy. The baby died Friday morning.
