Clarinda Police warn of “spoofing” phone call scams
October 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson
The Clarinda Police Department is warning area residents about a phone scam. Someone is “spoofing” the caller I-D system of the victim, by generating a legitimate name of an area citizen with an unrelated phone number. The scammer is asking for personal identification and financial information such as bank account numbers, pin numbers, credit card numbers, etc.
DO NOT provide this information and do not rely solely on caller id to verify the identity of the caller as there is now software programming available for sophisticated scammers to defeat the caller id system.
