PITTSBURGH (AP) — Backup goalie Tomas Vokoun stopped 31 shots in his first playoff start in six years and the Pittsburgh Penguins blanked the New York Islanders 4-0 to take a 3-2 series lead in their first-round NHL playoff series. Sidney Crosby, Tyler Kennedy and Douglas Murray scored during a seven-minute stretch in the second period for the Islanders, who can eliminate New York with a victory Saturday on Long Island.

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators are moving onto the second round following a pair of lopsided Game 5 victories. The Blackhawks dispatched Minnesota 5-1 and the Senators outscored Montreal and its backup goalie Peter Budaj 6-1.

DENVER (AP) — CC Sabathia and five relievers combined on a four-hitter and the New York Yankees beat Colorado 3-1 in a game delayed more than two hours by rain at Coors Field. Robinson Cano homered and also had a single for his 1,500th career hit.

WASHINGTON (AP) __ Washington finished an abbreviated two-game interleague sweep by holding off the Detroit Tigers 5-4. Ryan Mattheus, Drew Storen and Rafael Soriano combined for shutout relief after Dan Haren nearly squandered a four-run lead. Soriano closed it out for his 12th save in 13 chances

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Roberto Castro tied the TPC Sawgrass course record with a 9-under 63 that’s good for a three-shot lead over Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy after the first round of The Players Championship. Tiger Woods shot a 5-under 67 and is tied with five other golfers four shots off the lead.
