Former Iowa SID George Wine dies at the age of 81

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — George Wine, a longtime sports information director at Iowa and co-author of an autobiography of Hawkeyes coach Hayden Fry, died Thursday following a heart attack. He was 81. The university said Wine died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, two days after undergoing hip replacement surgery. Wine served as the Hawkeyes’ SID from 1968-1993. He later co-wrote “The High Porch Picnic” with Fry and a book on Iowa’s sports history titled “Black & Gold Memories: The Hawkeyes of the 20th Century.” A former president of CoSIDA, he was inducted into the Kinnick Stadium Media Wall of Fame in 2006.

Wine was born in Omaha, Neb., and served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954.He graduated from Iowa two years later and was the sports information director at what is now Northern Iowa and Memphis before returning to his alma mater and home state. Survivors include his wife, Dr. Barrie Anderson, and son, Steve Wine, a sports writer for The Associated Press based in Miami.
