Flowers Named B1G Freshman of the Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa freshman Payton Flowers was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.

In the meet against No. 24 Minnesota on Oct. 31, Flowers collected two of Iowa’s three individual wins. In the 50 free, Flowers swam 23.02 and moved to ninth on the Hawkeyes’ top-10 list. Flowers’ second win was in the 100 fly in 54.20. This time positioned her at eighth on the program’s top-10 record book.

Flowers was a part of both top relay teams against the Golden Gophers. In the 200 free relay, Flowers, Audrey Olen, Ella Jean Kelly and Jenna Kerr placed second (1:33.48). During the 200 medley relay, Addie Crain, Olivia Swalley, Flowers and Olen collected silver with a time of 1:42.38.

Iowa’s most recent weekly conference award winners were in December of 2024. Nora Kemp won freshman of the week and alum Annie Galvin won swimmer of the week.

Flowers, a freshman from DeForest, Wisconsin, has claimed four individual wins throughout the first two meets of the season.

University of Iowa swimming and diving travels to West Lafayette, Indiana, to take on Purdue on Friday. The meet will take place at 3 p.m. (CT) in the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
