Iowa Attorney General warns of scammers posing as potential employers

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Attorney General Brenna Bird is warning Iowans of scammers who are impersonating potential employers. Bird says in this scam, the scammer offers you a job through a text or email allowing work from home with little effort. Then the scammer pushes for answers involving personal financial information for “direct deposit.” The attorney general’s office warns that job offers requiring personal financial details before an interview or official hiring are likely scams.
“If a job offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers are evil and prey on people who need a job or extra income,” said Attorney General Bird. “Be very aware, do your homework on a potential employer, and don’t give away your personal information until you have a job offer from a legitimate business.”
When a job offer is offered, take these steps before accepting:
  • Search online for the company and hiring manager. Look to find out if other people have been scammed by the company or person.
  • Do not give them money or personal information for the job. A legitimate employer will never ask you to pay for a job.
  • Look out for requests to handle money. Never accept a job that requires you to deposit a check and then send some of the money back. This is a fake check scam.
Anyone who has been a victim of this scam, or has questions, should contact the Iowa Attorney General’s office at 1-888-777-4590.
