The Audubon Wheelers boys basketball team showed off multiple styles of basketball as they defeated the Red Oak Tigers 68-52 on Monday night. Audubon not only kept up with the three-point shooting of the Tigers but also moved the ball well in transition and scored in the paint. Although Red Oak never backed down the Wheelers pulled away late to move to 4-3 on the season.

Coming into the game it was apparent that Red Oak would shoot the three ball frequently. However, it was Audubon that came storming out the gate with three-pointers. Mason Steckler hit three in the first quarter as a part of Audubon’s five in the first half. Although Carson Roder chipped in a pair of long balls for the Tigers, Carson Wessel chimed in with 3 field goals to help lift the Wheelers to a six-point first quarter lead. Both offensives slowed down in the second but it was the Audubon defense that held Red Oak to just seven points to end the half with a 31-21 lead.

The second half was dotted with runs by both teams. Red Oak went on two separate 8-0 runs with the latter in the final minutes of the game to bring the score to within two. However, each time the Wheelers settled in and found a response. Brody Schultes led the way for the Wheelers knocking down 4 second-half field goals in addition to several free throws to lead the game with 21 points. However, it was Audubon’s depth and ability to play in different ways that pushed them over the top. Wessel and Steckler both finished the game with 18 points as the Wheeler pulled away late for their fourth win of the season.

Head Coach Darran Miller was particularly proud of the way his team responded to the adversity Red Oak provided.

Miller was also happy with Schultes’ but also believes they are coming together as a group.

Audubon’s depth and ability to play multiple different ways was one of Miller’s biggest takeaways.

The Wheelers will look for back-to-back wins as they travel to Logan-Magnolia to take on the Panthers on Tuesday.
