Iowa State Women top Alcorn State Sunday

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s women’s basketball team (7-3 overall, 0-0 Big 12) defeated Alcorn State (2-7, 0-0 SWAC), 91-41 at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday. Seanna Johnson, Meredith Burkhall, Emily Durr and Bridget Carleton made for a balanced offensive attack, each tying for a game-high 14 points.

The Cyclones broke things open in the second quarter, using a 20-2 run over the final six minutes of the half to take a commanding 43-19 lead into halftime. The ISU offense found its rhythm, assisting on seven of nine made field goals in the quarter without any turnovers. Bridget Carleton and Durr led the way in the scoring column with six points each in the quarter.

Nicole Blaskowsky’s shooting highlighted the third quarter for the Cyclones, as the junior hit three triples and sparked a 12-2 ISU run to end the period. The Iowa State defense forced seven turnovers in the quarter and gave up just four made field goals, as they ground the Lady Braves’ offense to a halt. ISU led 70-35 heading into the fourth.

The Iowa State reserves played the bulk of the fourth quarter and were locked in on the defensive end. They held Alcorn State to 1-of-14 shooting from the field and just six points total. The Cyclones outscored the Braves 21-6 in the quarter to win the game, 91-41. Every Cyclone that was available to play in the game scored.

Iowa State will be back in Hilton Coliseum on Tuesday, Dec. 22 to take on Northern Arizona at 2 p.m. CT. Television coverage for the game can be found on Cyclones.tv.
