Missouri River claims man who tried to save his daughters

Father’s Day turned tragic for a family whose father drowned trying to rescue his daughters as they were being pulled-in by the Missouri River current while wading and playing in the river Sunday afternoon. The Omaha World-Herald says the incident happened during a Father’s Day outing at NP Dodge Park, on the Nebraska side of the river, near Omaha.

31-year old Elias Salvador, of Omaha, jumped into the river to try to save his two daughters and two other children. The children were rescued by three fisherman and family members. They tried to save Salvador, but were unable to pull him from the river current’s grip.

Search and rescue teams from around Omaha and Pottawattamie County looked for Salvador’s body until and it was recovered by an Omaha Fire Department dive team just after 8-p.m., Sunday.
