SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Woodbury County officials are considering whether to add more nurses to treat inmates at the jail, after its sheriff pleaded for more support. The county board will look into costs before making a decision in September. County Sheriff Dave Drew told board members he needs the additional personnel to properly oversee inmates at the jail. Board Chairman George Boykin said there’s no money to add nurses in the current budget.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s field hockey players have released a statement supporting former coach Tracey Griesbaum, who was fired earlier this month. The players told the student newspaper, the Daily Iowan, that Griesbaum’s firing was “unfair and unjust.” The players went on to say that it left them questioning the leadership of the Iowa athletic department. Griesbaum told The Associated Press that her firing was based on false claims by former players that she bullied and mistreated them.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Two more Iowa counties have been added to a federal disaster declaration issued recently in response to severe weather. Crawford and Shelby counties have been added to the disaster declaration granted two weeks ago to 22 Iowa counties that experienced damage due to storms and flooding.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A former Council Bluffs doctor sentenced to prison for possession of child pornography has agreed to a plea deal in a separate case. Sixty-nine-year-old Dennis Jones was sentenced to 10 years in prison for lascivious acts with a child. He will serve it concurrently with a 10-year federal prison sentence for possession of child pornography. Authorities say they found about 1.2 million images and 9,300 videos of child pornography during a search of Jones’ home.
