(Des Moines, IA) – The Director of Iowa Safe Routes to School for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, say “Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day” was a huge success across the state of Iowa this year, with more than 100 schools participating in the nationwide event. Matthew Burkey said schools from across the state encouraged students and families to walk, bike, or roll to school, promoting healthy habits, safer routes to school, and stronger community connections. Iowa also ranked 5th nationally for per capita participation, highlighting the growing momentum for active transportation throughout the state.
According to Burkey, “This event continues to grow because communities are seeing the value of getting students moving in a safe and fun way. Whether it was a walking school bus, a bike bus, or simply more families choosing to walk to school together, schools across Iowa showed how active transportation can positively impact students and communities.”
Schools celebrated in a variety of ways, including organizing bike buses, remote drop-off and walk locations, volunteer welcome stations, and school-wide celebrations. In addition to promoting physical activity, many schools reported reduced traffic congestion around school drop-off areas and increased excitement from students and families.
Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day is held each May and October nationally and continues to serve as an easy and fun way for schools to introduce active transportation into their communities.
