Gravel Pit Public Hearing in Shelby County

(Avoca, IA) – Officials with the Regional Water Rural Water Association, based in Avoca, posted a notice on their website, Wednesday, stating that “A petition has been filed for a Conditional User Permit in an A-1 Agricultural District as applied to property in a location within Sections 21 and 22 of Fairview Township. The site is in the general vicinity of 311 Hwy 59.

“The petition asks that the property currently zoned as an A-1 Agricultural District be granted a Special Use Permit to allow construction and operation of a Sand and Gravel Extraction, Processing and Sales operation.”

A public hearing will be held by the Shelby County Planning & Zoning Board of Adjustment, Monday, June 29th beginning at 9:00AM, in the Shelby County Board of Supervisors Meeting Room – Lower Level, of the Shelby County Courthouse in Harlan, at which time persons may appear, either in person or by agent or attorney, or in writing in opposition to or support of, the proposed Permit.

The hearing is not limited to those receiving copies of the notice, and if residents know of any neighbors or affected property owners who, for any reason, have not received a copy, you are asked to inform them of the public hearing.”

Regional Water officials said they are concerned that a gravel pit that operates this close to their wellfield will drastically deplete the groundwater they use to provide water to their customers. “With everything we have done and the restrictions that have been in place for so long,” the statement said, “we believe that this is too much of a risk to the water supply for our customers.”
