Storm reports from the May 18th event across western Iowa

Here are the initial reports (compiled as of 3:30-a.m. today of storm-related incidents in southwest Iowa.

Information from the National Weather Service offices in Des Moines, IA:

9:35-p.m. (5/18) – Flash Flooding was occurring in Mount Ayr, with knee deep water in front yards and basements flooding; Streets were flooded and a car was fully submerged; A bridge was underwater 5-miles S of Tingley, in Ringgold County; Hwy 169 & 190th Street was closed due to mud sliding onto the road after an estimated 3.5-inches of rain had fallen.

7:09-p.m. – Multiple reports from Ringgold County Emergency Management of tornadoes north of Mt. Ayr/

6:56-p.m. – Emergency Management confirmed a tornado on the ground near Benton, in Ringgold County.

6:30 & 6:40-p.m. – A spotter confirmed a tornado near Athelstan, in Taylor County.

Reports from the NWS office in Omaha/Valley, NE:

5:57-p.m. & 5:51-p.m. – 1″ diameter (Quarter-size) hail in Clarinda (Page County, IA)

5:47-p.m. – A personal weather station near Shambaugh registers and 84-mph wind gust.

5:36-p.m. – Ping Pong ball-size hail (1.5″ diameter) reported in College Springs.

5:04-p.m. – Ping Pong ball-size hail (1.5″ diameter) reported S of Farragut (Fremont County)
