(Radio Iowa) – Iowans are being reminded about the dangers of hot weather, as we may see high temperatures hit 95 by this time next week. Meteorologist Brooke Hagenhoff), at the National Weather Service, says we’ve already experienced some steamy afternoons this spring, but the upcoming heat wave is expected to be prolonged.
“We did have a couple warmer days, even in March, really kind of sprinkled through, but it looks like we have a more persistent heat coming up really for the first time this summer, coming up next week,” Hagenhoff says. “We’re looking to get temperatures that could reach the mid-90s as we get towards the middle to end of next week.”
Iowans know how severe cold weather can threaten life and limb, but the extreme heat can be equally as deadly without proper precautions. “The most important thing is that with high heat, it’s the humidity that comes with it that can be the most dangerous, especially here in Iowa,” Hagenhoff says. “As temperatures warm up and it becomes a little more humid, doing things to keep yourself safe like taking breaks in the shade, wearing proper clothing, and making sure to drink plenty of water.”
The forecast calls for high temperatures mostly in the 80s for the next few days, with 90s likely settling in as soon as Tuesday.
