(Red Oak, IA) – The suspect who fired at officers in Red Oak, has been charged with Attempted Murder. According to the Red Oak Police Department, 24-year-old Sam Thomas Sapphire Morgan, of Red Oak, was arrested at around 3:30-p.m. Monday, June 22nd, for the Attempted Murder of a Police Officer. The charge and arrest stems from an incident that occurred June 16th, where officers were fired upon.
Authorities say the Department of Criminal Investigation had issued the warrant for Morgan’s arrest. Morgan was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held without bond.

Police Chief Justin Rhamy says the incident started when officers were called out on a welfare check. He says they were attempting to talk to the occupant of the house. “That occupant exited the house, and upon doing so, fired multiple rounds from a handgun-style firearm in the direction of an officer,” he says. Rhamy says the officer was able to take cover.”
The suspect continued to shoot at officers and one officer returned fire. [The officer ] “Struck the suspect, neutralized the threat at that point in time, [the suspect] went to the ground. Paramedics with the Red Oak Fire Department were on scene, able to provide treatment,” he said.
The suspect – later identified as Sam Morgan – was taken to the local hospital and later transferred by helicopter to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha and listed in stable condition.
