(Oakland, IA) – Officials with the City of Oakland, Monday afternoon, issued a Boil Water Notice for some customers of the City’s Water Distribution System. The City said the Order was the result of a water main break on South Chatburn Avenue, that occurred at around 2-p.m., and resulted in a possible, negative pressure situation. When that happens, it increases the chances of untreated water and harmful microbes entering the water supply lines.
Harmful microbes in drinking water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms, and may pose a health risk for infants, some elderly, and those with severely compromised immune systems. If you experience such symptoms, seek medical advice.
As of the latest report, crews successfully conducted repairs to the damaged area of the distribution system, and it was operating at normal pressure. Water samples were being taken to test for possible contamination.
Until test results come back from the lab, all customers of the Oakland Water Works on S Chautauqua Ave., must boil their water. Residents on S Chautauqua Avenue should boil their water until further notice. Boil your water before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food.
Other customers in the area may experience temporary water discoloration.
