(Atlantic, IA) – The City Council in Atlantic is set to meet during a regularly scheduled session that begins at 5:30-p.m. on Wednesday, May 6th in their chamber inside the Atlantic City Hall Building. On their agenda:
A Resolution amending a section of the City’s Financial Policy with regard to an increase in the amount paid to the City’s cleaning services provider. The Personnel and Finance Committee unanimously recommended the Council approve a 13.3-percent increase in pay to Melissa Johnson, who has provided over nine-years of quality cleaning service to the City. The rate increase would be the first she has received since 2017. The City’s Financial Policy amendment in this and other matters, according to City Administrator John Lund, would ensure the Council is “Operating within the bounds of established policy…[and in using its discretion] to continue to maintain business relationships with parties where either reputation or long-standing relationships can be preserved.”
The Council is also expected to act on an Order approving the lease of a City-owned lot at 11 Locust Street, to Scott Bennett, owner of Nishnanet, for a period of 10-years at a rate of $600 compounded annually at three-percent. Bennett says he intends to have the area enclosed by what John Lund says is a “breakable fence there so doggies can run around…and do what they do.” The City’s P&F Committee unanimously recommends the Council approve the lease contract.
The Personnel and Finance Committee also recommended the Council pass a Resolution “Setting seasonal Wastewater Wages for 2026” to hire an intern for 12 weeks, at about 20-hours per week, at $18/hour – the same as the City offered last Spring. The Council previously authorized a Wastewater Intern in the Spring of 2025 for the FY 2025 and 2026 Budgets. The position was funded by a $5,000 grant through the Iowa Water Environment Association. New Wastewater Superintendent Travis Hanson, Lund says, would like to pursue the grant again.
The Atlantic City Council is also expected to act on setting May 20th at 5:30-p.m., as the date and time for a public hearing on the sale of an empty, City-owned lot 411 Birch Street, to Paul and Kristi Wegner, of Harlan, who intend to build a $300,000 4-bedroom home on the property. The purchase price of One-dollar includes the removal of trees from the Lot. No other bids have been offered to the City. The Council accepted the proposal during their meeting April 15th, and ordered the City Administrator to meet with the City’s attorney to draw-up legal papers for the transfer of the land. The paperwork is complete and the sale can be executed following the Public Hearing, assuming their are no objections.
Other business for the Council, Wednesday, includes:
- An Order to approve a Pay Application in the amount of $30,379.82 to Bluff’s Paving for the concrete street improvements.
- And, action on a Resolution “Establishing Privileges for the City Bank Accounts,” with regard to the City Administrator and City Clerk, so that access to those accounts can be easily utilized and updated as necessary.
