(Atlantic, IA) – The City Council in Atlantic met during a regularly scheduled session Wednesday. During their session, the Council passed:
- A Resolution amending a section of the City’s Financial Policy with regard to an increase in the amount paid to the City’s cleaning services provider. The move ensures the City’s Financial Policy amendment in that and other matters is “Operating within the bounds of established policy…[and in using its discretion] to continue to maintain business relationships with parties where either reputation or long-standing relationships can be preserved.”
- An Order approving the lease of a City-owned lot at 11 Locust Street, to Scott Bennett, owner of Nishnanet, for a period of 10-years.
- A Resolution “Setting seasonal Wastewater Wages for 2026” to hire an intern for 12 weeks, at about 20-hours per week, at $18/hour – the same as the City offered last Spring.
- The Council also agreed to set May 20th at 5:30-p.m., as the date and time for a public hearing on the sale of an empty, City-owned lot 411 Birch Street, to Paul and Kristi Wegner, of Harlan, who intend to build a $300,000 4-bedroom home on the property. The purchase price of One-dollar includes the removal of trees from the Lot. No other bids have been offered to the City. The Council accepted the proposal during their meeting April 15th, and ordered the City Administrator to meet with the City’s attorney to draw-up legal papers for the transfer of the land. The paperwork is complete and the sale can be executed following the Public Hearing, assuming their are no objections.

The Council approved a Pay Application in the amount of $89,457 to TK Concrete for the West 22nd Street improvement project. The original intent was to approve a Pay Application for $130,257. but City Engineer Dave Sturm said because the project was running behind, the City executed its right to retainage.
Sturm said the company was over its promised completion date by 68.5 days. He said their goal is to have the street opened by this weekend, but that is far from certain.
The Council did approve a Pay Application for $30,379.82 to Bluffs Paving, for the Concrete Street Improvement Projects. And, they passed a Resolution “Establishing Privileges for the City Bank Accounts,” with regard to the City Administrator and City Clerk, so that access to those accounts can be easily utilized and updated as necessary.
