(Atlantic, IA) – The Atlantic City Council will meet at 5:30-p.m. Wednesday, June 3rd, in the Council’s Chambers inside City Hall. On their agenda is a presentation for Rod Deter, with the Atlantic Cemetery Association. That will be followed by action on an Order to approve a Fireworks event permit for Dan Vargason (1303 Maple St.) conditional upon the Atlantic Trojan Softball Team hosting a regional softball final. The fireworks display would immediately follow the game, and not exceed two-minutes in length.
The Council will act also, on an Order designating Code Enforcement/Animal Control Officer Kris Erickson as the City of Atlantic Building Official authorized to enforce Dangerous Buildings designations. Their action will be followed by an Order to proceed with a Dangerous Building designation for 910 Hazel Street, which has been in disrepair for many years, according to City Administrator John Lund, and “Is a serious threat to [the] safety of anyone inside or near it, and is far beyond repair.” Lund notes that animals are freely coming and going from the structure as well. He says it needs to be sealed and promptly demolished. The City Attorney’s Office recommends the Council approve the demolition.
The Council will act on a Resolution pertaining to “Reclassifying Funds, Establishing New Funds, and Authorizing Transfer of Fund Balances in Accordance with the GASB 54” (a Government Accounting Standards Board statement), and a Resolution “Establishing the FEMA Disaster Recovery Capital Projects Fund and Providing for its Purpose, Funding and Use,” with regard to the creation of a dedicated FEMA fund that will, according to John Lund, “establish a clean audit trail and create a liquidity buffer specifically for disasters. For the time being, the seed amount for the fund (If approved) would be $875,000.
The Council’s final action item will be an Order setting June 17, 2026 at 5:30-p.m., as the date and time for a Public Hearing on amending the FY2026 Budget. The amount of the Budget amendment won’t be known until a full accounting of FY2026 is completed. The hearing is required if the City expects to over-spend on any of the nine, state-defined budget activities during the fiscal year, and is considered a routine matter.
