(Atlantic, IA) – As Iowa and the nation continue to prepare for Independence Day celebrations, the Atlantic Police Department and City of Atlantic remind residents the use of fireworks is permissible July 2nd, from 5-until 11-p.m., July 3rd and 4th, from 9-a.m. until 11-p.m., both days.
Iowa law was updated last year to prohibit cites from banning the discharge of consumer fireworks on July 3rd and 4th. The legislation also established legal hours for fireworks use and prevents cities from imposing more restrictive hours than those set by state law for July the 3rd and 4th . Keep in mind, City offices will be closed July 3rd to celebrate Independence Day.
The City of Exira’s 161st 4th of July celebration begins Friday, July 3rd. Exira Community Club member Steph Petersen says they’ve been making preparations for months. That includes getting ready for the big parade with an extended route on July 4th, starting at 10:30-a.m. Registration for those with a float or vehicle they want entered in the parade is from 8-until 10-a.m. Saturday, at the Exira Legion Park. Petersen said the Van Aernam’s dedication to and volunteerism in, the community over the years, are some of the reasons they were chosen at Grand Marshal’s for the parade. Friday’s activities including a 5-and 10-k fun run beginning at 7:45-a.m., with registration open until Thursday evening. A Mason’s breakfast at the old Exira Fire Hall starts at 8-a.m. There’s also a carnival and kiddie parade Friday evening, along with a Community BBQ in the City Park, and a street dance from 8-p.m. Until midnight.
Celebrations in Massena also start Friday. Activities begin with registration for golf at Crestwood Hills in Anita, beginning at 9-a.m., and continue with lunch provided by the Massena Historical Society from 11-a.m. until 4-p.m., Friday. Brooke Bissell with the Massena Chamber says they’ve been planning for the festivities – which rotates every year between Massena – Fontanelle and Greenfield, for about a year.
The kiddie parade starts at 6-p.m., followed at 6:30 by a beer garden and music. Pony rides run from 6:45-until 7:45-p.m., Friday at the Massena City Park. There’s also face painting, trivia night and a kids dance party from 8-9:30-p.m., and an outdoor fun run at 8:45-p.m.
And, the Riverside-Oakland Independence Day celebrations are planned for Friday and Saturday Carrie Rhodes said they have all sorts of fun planned for Friday afternoon and Saturday.
