3 injured in separate eastern IA crashes, Monday

(Iowa News) – Two separates crashes Monday evening in eastern Iowa resulted in a total of three persons injured, including a teenager. The Iowa State Patrol says the accidents occurred in Dubuque and Van Buren Counties.

In Dubuque County, a collision between a pickup truck and a farm tractor occurred at around 5:25-p.m., Monday, on westbound Highway 20 at mile marker 306 (near Epworth), when the pickup, driven by 64-year-old Dean Dettbarn, of Dyersville, hit the tractor, operated by 25-year-old Levi Pfab, of Epworth. The tractor was pulling an anhydrous toolbar with an anhydrous tank in tow.

Dean Dettbarn suffered what authorities say were life-threatening injuries. He was transported by Epworth EMS to Mercy One Hospital, in Dubuque. The accident remains under investigation. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office and MercyOne Dubuque Air Evac.

The other accident, in Van Buren County, occurred at around 6:40-p.m. on Iowa Highway 2, northwest of Farmington. The State Patrol says a 2011 BMW 328 driven by a 15-year-old male from Birmingham (IA) was eastbound on Highway 2 and attempting to make a slight left turn to go eastbound onto Route W40 in Van Buren County. When the teen failed to yield, his car was struck head-on by a westbound 2021 SUV driven by 47-year-old Erica A. Barlow, of Revere, MO.

Barlow and the teen were injured in the crash. The unidentified 15-year-old was flown to the University of Iowa Hospital. Erica Barlow was transported to the Van Buren Hospital by Van Buren EMS. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Bonaparte and Farmington Rescue services.
