It was another great day at the Blue Oval for Day 2 of the State Track and Field Championships. Plenty of local area athletes had great days, but none may have had a better day than CAM’s Ada Hansen. She qualified for the 100m Hurdles finals with a first place time of 14.96, and a little bit later won the 400m hurdles title and broke the state meet record with a time of 54:41. It’s her second title so far this season.
The Riverside Boys Distance Medley relay team took second place, earning them more points towards an overall team state championship. Their time of 3:35.68 was a season best for the Bulldogs. Although they wanted the state title in the event, they know that a second place victory gets their school closer to an overall win for the meet. Cruz Jaquez gave his thoughts after their run.
Another personal best was set, this time for the CAM Cougars Boys 4x200m relay team. They took 6th place with a time of 1:31.09. It was the second fastest time of any local area schools, right behind Woodbine. Carson McKee, who ran the first leg of the race, described the feeling of breaking their season record.
Later on in the meet, the Atlantic Trojans Girls 4x200m relay team raced and set a season best as well. Although they did not medal in the event, their time of 1:45.25 was faster than any time the Trojans had run during the season. Lila Wiederstein, a senior, spoke about her final race and how it felt.
In other local area schools, St. Albert Girls Distance medley repeated as champions with a time of 4:08.87. Jaxon Gordon qualified for the finals in the 100m hurdles, while AHSTW, St. Albert and Riverside qualified for the finals in the girls 4x400m relays. Riverside also qualified in the boys 4x400m relay.
All of those schools and many more will compete for state titles on Saturday during the third and final day of the Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships. Track live results on KJAN.com and tune in to KJAN Radio Atlantic for live updates at the end of every hour from 9am to 5pm.
