FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Five Hawkeyes advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals following their performances at the 2026 NCAA First Rounds at John McDonnell Field on Thursday night.
Rosemary Arthur highlighted the day with an automatic qualification in the 800 meters. Arthur raced a personal-best 2:02.77 to finish third in heat one and book a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Her time updated her standing at No. 2 on Iowa’s all-time list. Leanna Lewis will join Arthur in the quarters after advancing on time in 2:04.91.
Holly Duax heads to the next round after qualifying on time in the 200 meters. Duax ran just off of her personal best in the first round and finished in 23.28. In the 100-meter hurdles, Jailya Ash advanced to Saturday’s quarters with an 11.26 auto-qualifying time. She finished third in heat two to earn the automatic bid.
“Overall, it was a really good day for the Hawkeye women,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Jailya got things started with a terrific 100-hurdle prelim, running right off of her PR to qualify to the quarterfinals on Saturday. She’s been building these last few weeks and putting some great races together and is set up well going into Saturday. Holly finished the night off with a very strong race in the 200. She came off the curve in good position and really came home strong to get the time qualifier to Saturday.”
“Rosemary kept the momentum going with a tremendous 800-meter race, getting out strong from the gun and building hard the last 200 to get the auto Q to Saturday,” said Woody. “Leanna ran a great 800 race, as well. She got stuck on the inside a bit and couldn’t move for half of the race, but competed extremely well the last 100 meters to qualify on time to the quarters.”
Chioma Nwachukwu scored a clean heat win to move on to Saturday’s quarterfinals in the 400 meters. Nwachukwu won the opening heat in 51.38. Teammates Alivia Williams (52.84), Princess Uche (52.90) and Damaris Mutunga (53.04) narrowly missed qualification to the next round.
“Chioma ran a superb first 300 meters and came home strong to win her heat and qualify to Saturday,” Woody continued. “She is building great confidence at the right time.”
In the field, Lizzy Korczak finished 19th in the javelin with a 48.33-meter toss. In the women’s hammer throw, freshman Josephine Flynt led the Hawkeyes with a 59.50-meter mark. Peyton Wilson wrapped up her season with a throw of 56.21 meters. Wilson and Flynt ended their respective seasons at fifth and sixth on Iowa’s top-10 list. Lovisa Ulvenstam completed her rookie campaign with a 6.18-meter mark in the long jump.
Up Next: Action continues with the men’s quarterfinals on Friday. Bryce Ruland starts the day in the discus at 1 p.m. before the 4×1 races at 5 p.m. at John McDonnell Field.
