(Red Oak, IA) – The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, during their regular weekly meeting this (Tuesday) morning (June 30th), passed a resolution adopting an E-Verify Employment Eligibility Verification Policy, which becomes law on July 1st. Auditor Jill Ozuna explained the County previously did not have a pre-employment policy for new hires, as required by the State.
The Board then resumed discussion held last week, with regard to a proposal create a part-time budget, finance, and human resource director’s or clerk’s position at up to 30 hours per week.
Board Chair Charla Schmid said she is not opposed to the position, but would like to see a job description before any resolution is passed.
Auditor Ozuna and Schmid got into a bit of a terse conversation on why Ozuna wants the position created, in light of her office being inundated with dealing with a software conversion that’s underway.
Schmid was not happy with what she perceived to be Ozuna’s “throwing the guilt” of her office being overworked, on the Board.
In a previous session, Jill Ozuna also presented information regarding the amount of overtime hours she and her employees accrue, audit firm expenses, and the statutory and non-statutory duties her office handles. Schmid asked her if there was something internally the Board could do to take the load off, before another person is added. Ozuna said “You can take all those responsibilities and move [them] to another department.”
County Treasurer Jackie Porter previously stated the additional staffer could help her office address issues outlined in the county’s fiscal 2025 audit report. Near the end of discussion, Supervisor Bryant Amos suggested the Board “take a break” from the subject for a couple of months, and then come back to it.
No action was taken on resolutions to create a part-time Director’s position, nor an associated part-time Clerk position.
