Atlantic City Council to act on 1st Readings of amended Mowing, solid waste, & snow/ice removal, and Code Enforcement “Courtesy notice” measures

(Atlantic, IA) – The Atlantic City Council will meet during a regular session Wednesday, July 1st, beginning at 5:30-p.m. at their Chambers inside the Atlantic City Hall building. On their agenda is the First Reading of three Amended Ordinances pertaining to mowing, snow/ice removal and solid waste removal.

An amendment to Ordinance #1069 has three proposed changes to “Simplify administration, create consistency between nuisance abatement programs, and better reflect the City’s labor, equipment, and administrative costs,” with regard to the mowing of properties. That includes a revised fee schedule with regard to mowing City crews perform on properties violating the Code regulating how tall grass may grow before the problem is abated. The proposed fee schedule is as follows:

An amendment to Ordinance #1066 addresses the fee schedule to abate nuisance properties where there is garbage and/or solid waste violations. The proposed fee schedule is as follows:

The proposed fee also includes the actual cost of “Miscellaneous Materials,” and paper documents, as mentioned in the proposed mowing fees. The Atlantic City Council will also act on passing the First Reading of an Order “To approve the ‘Courtesy Notice Program’ as [a] Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Code Enforcement.

In addition to being published annually in the Atlantic News Telegraph, the City’s current nuisance abatement ordinance would include the implementation of a “Courtesy Nuisance Program,” whereby temporary yard signs would be erected on properties where grass/weed violations are observed. City Administration John Lund says the signs would only serve as a courtesy reminder, and would not replace, modify or expand the notice requirements established by City Code, and are not intended for use during the snow/ice removal season.

The City’s Personnel and Finance Committee reviewed all three proposed ordinances during their meeting on June 23rd, and unanimously endorsed the changes mentioned.
